Joining the practice
Glenrothes Dental House is a mixed practice. We offer both NHS and private treatment. Here is exactly what happens when you join, what it costs, and what you need to bring.

Can I get in?
Call and ask. NHS availability changes from week to week, so any answer printed on a web page would be out of date by the time you read it. We would rather tell you the true position on the day than publish something that stops being true.
Private appointments are normally available sooner than NHS ones. If you are in pain, say so when you call — we keep appointments free each day for that.

Your first appointment
Allow about 30 minutes. It is an examination, not treatment.
We go through your health. Medicines you take, conditions you have, allergies, and anything that has happened at a dentist before that you would rather we knew.
We look at everything, not just your teeth. Gums, tongue, cheeks and the soft tissue. That part is a mouth cancer check and it takes under a minute.
X-rays if you need them. They show decay between teeth and bone levels, which no examination can see directly. We only take them if there is a reason.
We tell you what we found. In plain words, while you are sitting up, not lying back.
You get a written plan and a price for each item. You take it away. Nothing is booked in on the spot unless you want it to be.
If something needs doing urgently we will say so. Otherwise there is no pressure to decide anything on the day.

What the first visit costs
NHS examination
Free
Private new patient consultation
from £45
Emergency examination
from £10
NHS dental examinations are free for everyone in Scotland, including check-ups after the first one. Those charges are set by the Scottish Government, not by us.
Any treatment you go on to have is priced separately and you see the figure before you agree. Our full price list is here, with an effective date and what each price covers.

What to bring
A list of any medicines you take, or the boxes
Your previous dentist’s name, if you can remember it
Proof of any NHS exemption — a certificate or an award letter. If you are under 26, or pregnant, or gave birth in the last 12 months, just tell us.
Glasses, if you need them to read a treatment plan
If you do not have any of it, come anyway. None of it stops you being seen.

Children
Everyone under 26 is exempt from NHS dental charges in Scotland, so children are seen on the NHS at no cost.
Bring them along to your own appointment before they need one of their own. Sitting in the room while nothing happens to them is the easiest introduction there is, and it is a large part of why some adults are frightened of dentists and others are not.

If you are nervous
You can come in just to talk, with no examination and nothing going in your mouth. Plenty of people do.
