You do not need to put it in writing if you would rather not. Nor do you need to use the word “complaint”.

What happens next

We acknowledge it within three working days. If you complained in person or by phone and we sorted it out on the spot, that is the end of it unless you want it taken further.
We look into it. That usually means speaking to the people involved and reading your records.
We give you a full response within 20 working days. If it is going to take longer, we will tell you why and when to expect it.
We tell you what we found and what we are changing. Including an apology where one is owed.
If you are complaining on behalf of someone else, we will normally need their written consent before we can discuss their treatment with you.

If you are not satisfied with our answer

You can take it to an independent body. Which one depends on whether your treatment was NHS or private. You do not need our permission and you do not have to tell us.

For NHS treatment

NHS Fife Patient Experience Team
If you are still not satisfied after that, you can ask the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman to look at how your complaint was handled. spso.org.uk

For private treatment

Dental Complaints Service
The Dental Complaints Service is funded by the General Dental Council and is free to use. They ask that you try to resolve it with us first.

Concerns about a dentist’s fitness to practise

Complaints about treatment go to the routes above. If your concern is about whether a dental professional is fit to practise at all, that is the General Dental Council, which regulates every dentist and dental care professional in the UK.

Time limits

Complain as soon as you can. Generally you should raise a complaint within 12 months of the treatment, or within 12 months of realising there was a problem. The independent bodies can extend that where there is a good reason.

Complaints

Your records and your information

We keep a record of complaints separately from your dental records, so making one does not affect your clinical notes. We use the information only to investigate and respond.
